James Bond Island

Visited in 2 of our programs

Khao Phing Kan — universally known as James Bond Island since 'The Man with the Golden Gun' filmed here in 1974 — is a photo stop you have to make at least once. The star is Ko Tapu, the 20-metre limestone needle that juts straight up out of Phang Nga Bay next to its taller sibling. The boat drops you on a small beach, you walk five minutes to the viewpoint, take your photos, and spend another fifteen browsing the floating sea gypsy market selling pearls and dried seafood. It's crowded during the day but the geology is genuinely stunning — these karst towers rose from an ancient coral reef 75 million years ago, and the bay around them is Thailand's largest national marine park.
